Hooper's career can really be divided into two categories. Pre Mangler and Post Mangler. (I haven't seen Night Terrors, but I can't imagine that that film will appeal to me) What a drop in quality after Body Bags. The last (shared) pass for Hooper. After that it only got worse.

The Mangler is not a disaster, but disappointing compared to his previous work. This is mainly due to some of the actors, the CGI and the script. The casting of the inspector, his sidekick and some of the ladies was a real disaster. Very annoying protagonist. On the other hand, fortunately one can still enjoy Englund's over the top performance. Without him the film would probably have had an even lower score. The CGI at the end of the film was also a bit too much for me. The idea was nice, but I should have left the machine a bit more in the dark or something.

Positive points are definitely the gore and the scenes with the machine, which are shot in a nice atmospheric way.

Not a disaster, but I can't call this a successful film.

2.5*

Quite atmospheric.

Very cool thing, that machine. Nicely oiled, lots of steam, sturdy chains and very, uhm, mechanical. Hooper's camerawork sometimes even resembles Japanese fetish beasts like Tsukamoto.

Fortunately, quite a bit of atmosphere is extracted from this, camera work is quite strong and lighting was also my thing, colorful but very exaggerated. Gore was also worth a try, you don't see that much with those classic horror guests.

In addition, you have dumb & dumber who really make a terrible duo. What poor actors. Englund is on a roll and, with that photographer, he is a nice, over-the-top bright spot in that area.

I had the impression that the story was quite massacred, but despite the high level of bullshit I still found it quite entertaining, with a nice climax. Most CGI effects are very bad.

Quite strikingly good and strikingly bad elements together in one film. Makes it quite unstable, but still more fun than just seen.

3*, I think it's better than his old work anyway.

Skinny.

Englund, Hooper and King. That really shouldn't go wrong.

It doesn't go wrong either, but it doesn't go any further than a ''nice'' film.

Englund plays his role well, but I thought the absolute best was Ted Levine. That's an incredibly talented actor.

Little tension. I didn't think the machine radiated anything scary or dark. The creepiest thing about the film was William Gartley, especially that guy who kept taking those pictures.

The kills of the machine were depicted quite nicely. It got really gory, especially towards the end. Unfortunately, the CGI is a bit dated, although that didn't really bother me.

''The Mangler'' has a few lesser parts. There were quite a few boring parts and I also got a bit tired of the inspector's endless racing in his jeep.

Tight 3 stars. Englund and Levine raise the level considerably.
