Strange Impersonation plot

"Hell hath no fury as a woman scalded by acid."

For the goal-oriented scientist Nora Goodrich, her pioneering work with anesthesia takes precedence over her marriage. When Nora's jealous colleague sabotages an experiment of hers, her face is severely disfigured. By a chance coincidence, Nora is able to take over the identity of the deranged chanteuse Jane Karaski and make her environment believe that she is dead. Nora takes on the form of Jane through plastic surgery, is able to build a new career and moves again among her old enemies and friends. Meanwhile, she quietly works on her revenge.

An ingenious plot that cannot be summarized in a few sentences, but it involves a dangerous experiment, arson, a fatal accident, plastic surgery, and assuming the identity of a person sentenced to death. As befits a good film noir, every complication leads to a new problem, and there is an ironic finale. The Dutch title is 'Vrouwenduel' (Women's Duel), and that is a fitting title, given that women clearly call the shots in this excellent thriller.

I had never heard of this film or anyone connected to it, except for the director, whose Westerns I have seen from the later and more successful period of his career. The plot is quite far-fetched and becomes somewhat implausible at times (although there is a reason for that), and if you have seen enough films, you can see the ending coming from a mile away. Nevertheless, it is a memorable little discovery and a fine example of how fine films can sometimes emerge quietly. The ending of the film, in which Mrs. A is convicted of the murder of Mrs. B, where A is secretly B and B is secretly A. I found her accompanying attempts to explain that complex plot to be a strong scene. You can feel the desperation when the character has to try to explain the bizarre twists of a noir.

Even though it is of course not the real ending of the film, but still...

Surprisingly nice B-noir with an equally surprising but still tad disappointing ending.
I certainly hadn't expected it to turn out that she had dreamt it all
