Then he meets Domenico, a deranged hermit who expects the end of time any moment. Gortchakov, however, is increasingly impressed by Domenico's philosophy of life.

Hmm... It's hard to write a review about this movie. I admire the Italian and Russian Cinema. Then I came across this Tarkovsky classic. During my research I listened to Pink Floyd's song 'Careful With that Ax Eugene', which by the way is a bizarre and depressing song. That's exactly how I felt about this movie. Very dark and little dialogue. It is a film that is not for everyone, because it is quite difficult to understand.

Halfway through the film I had the feeling 'what am I watching?'. This film left such an eccentric impression. Oleg Yankovsky... A very special man. Just right for this role. The beautiful Domiziana Giordano.... Also phenomenal. (Eugenia was her name, which gives a special reference to ...Ax Eugene...).

The moment Andrei had to fulfill his promise for Domenico by walking a candle in the leaked pool, I thought it was extraordinarily beautiful! No dialogue for 10 minutes. The ending is fascinating. Oleg sitting with Domenico's dog on the swampy land watching you.
Nostalghia is a beautiful piece of work that deserves a nice spot in My top 10!

What a wonderful movie! One that you really have to experience without too much noise around you. If you have too many distractions, I can imagine that you don't like this movie at all...

The images are beautiful from minute 1. The shots are long, but never feel too long. This is mainly due to the beautiful locations that have been chosen. Whether it is the scenes in the hotel, the village or in dilapidated buildings, you are breathless watching. For example, how the camera is moved around the 'bath' in the village, really phenomenal.

Truly a kind of work of art, a painting that you are looking at. And you really don't necessarily have to understand the story to enjoy this, the images speak for themselves in this case.

Together with Andrei Rublev my favorite Tarkovsky film so far. I now only have to see his last one, Sacrifice, and I'm very curious about that.

Third Tarkovsky.

As a director a very unique individual. Has probably almost only made well-known top films that are very popular among the right audience. It is true that these kinds of films will probably soon be forgotten as this form of cinema is a lot too slow for the up-and-coming film youth. I can still enjoy it in moderation.

However, I do believe that of all the Tarvkosky films I've seen, this is the least absorbing. It still has enchanting scenes, but I kind of miss that effect where I'm staring open-mouthed. Nostalgia does have its moments, but overall I thought it was drawn out remarkably long and just didn't always contain something that draws the viewer.

The acting isn't special either. Leading actor Yankovskiy has to endure a lot of weight as he has to speak a lot of strange and almost surreal dialogues. You don't seem to be able to do much with that as an actor, and Yankovskiy seems to feel lost. Fortunately, he's better than the rest of the crew, who don't have the talent to grab or hold the viewer's attention.

Visually, the film looks bleak and depressing, but the camera work is brilliant and very precise. The cinematography of Nostalgia looks strong. The effect where you have a sense of timelessness is still there, it just lacks the attributes to make the entire film absorbing. I have nothing to complain about when it comes to filters or visualizing something.

I'm glad that this is still a fairly short film by Tarkovsky's standards, because I found the session quite tiring at 125 minutes. With other films by this director, the (much) longer running time was never a big problem, but here it is. The directing is strong, but the acting and the dialogues are a bit less, and unfortunately do not attract attention enough here.
