"Nobody owns Tommy Riley. Nobody."
Due to financial circumstances, Tom Riley and his father John are forced to move to one of the lesser neighborhoods of Chicago. There they are confronted by street gangs who, spurred on by organizer Jimmy Horn, participate in illegal boxing matches where money is bet. Horn treats these boys like gladiators and promises them golden mountains for the future. His greatest weapon is racial hatred, which creates enormous tension in the neighborhood and also fuels aggression among the street fighters. When Tommy enters this group as a white person, he is initially ignored because of his skin color. Until he saves the life of Lincoln, one of the gang members.

To be clear: this is not the sword and sandals epic with Russell Crowe. This Gladiator is a hard-hitting, well-acted, but fairly predictable action film that also wants to be an indictment of violence and racism. It gives the film a little extra value. Also note a very good acting Brian Dennehy...

I think it's a good movie.
Watched it again, it's been a while since it came out.
I wouldn't compare him to Rocky.
This film has a different story, it is about illegal boxing matches and fighting for other reasons.
I always like the cast of this film. James Marshall as a real white boy among the blacks in a gray neighborhood of Chicago. There is trouble after a few minutes.
And Brian Dennehy is always very good as a bastard of course.
Music is also a plus of this film, it starts off nicely with those shots of Chicago slums to the beats of 'Killer' by Adamski & Seal, to be heard later in the film by LL Cool J, PM Dawn and Cheap Trick.
I thought the bare-knuckle brawl at the end was the highlight of the film, cool and hard.
Definitely one of my favorites in this genre of films.

Good film about a young man who starts boxing in the illegal circuit to get out of financial trouble. In terms of atmosphere, the whole thing comes close to the Rocky films. And the brown filter also looks good during the fights. The story and the characters are interesting enough and the film has a nice soundtrack and James Marshall also knows how to convince.
