First of the two cannibal films Franco made in 1980, which "coincidentally" are very similar in storylines.

Although it's not on the same level as a Cannibal Holocaust or a Cannibal Ferox, it's certainly a fun movie.

A group of cannibals attack a professor and his family, but the daughter manages to hide. When she is found later, the cannibals think she is the white goddess.

Years later, the father decides to search for his daughter with a new expedition.

A very short plot, but that's all it took to tell this story.

Franco's directing is good with good use of slow-motion and close-ups.

And then the cannibals... yes, the cannibals! They look like third-rate KISS members or actors from a Kabuki play. Very laughable...

Don't expect a "groundbreaking" cannibal movie. If you know the work of Jess Franco, you know what to expect!

3.5*

At first I rated this movie as good, but now that I've reviewed it, it's disappointing.

Cannibals is a movie made by Jess Franco. If you've seen some more of his work, you can already expect what this film is. Many scenes I recognized but come from the film of a year later Terreur Cannibale (1981). The scenes from this film have therefore been stolen and edited in that film. It doesn't matter much if this movie could have been just as bad as that movie. It's not really a big feast. The gore of this movie is okay. The actors went well, only Al Cliver comes out the best in terms of performance. Film also resembles Sexo Caníbal (1980). All in all, not a special cannibal film by Franco. It's a shame but so far it gets a measly 2.0 from me.

Possibly the most pure cannibal movie I've seen to date. Franco opted, in contrast to his Italian colleagues, for a film without animal suffering, in which the gore scenes are limited to the cannibalistic scenes.
These scenes are still fairly well portrayed, only here and there (partly due to the slow motion) stretched a bit too much. So even the cannibalism can get boring.
Furthermore, due to his film style, Franco fails to create any bond between the viewer and the characters. The daughter is kidnapped too early in the film and with the exception of Jereny Taylor (played by Al Cliver) the characters remain quite flat.
Cliver's acting is also the best. The rest, not helped by the bad English dub, doesn't exactly come across as convincing.
The colorfully painted cannibals look cool visually, but sometimes come across as a bit wooden.
The sometimes somewhat psychedelic soundtrack is perhaps the most positive thing about the film.
Again a Franco who doesn't get any further than mediocre with me.
