"Did Jennifer fear his fingers at her throat... or the burning caress of his lips?"
Jim Hollis helps Agnes Langley land a job as the supervisor of an old and abandoned estate. Jennifer, the owner's niece, was the last resident of the estate. She had mysteriously disappeared. Agnes begins to believe that Jennifer was murdered and that Jim, who is now in love with her, is responsible.

This mystery is reminiscent of Rebecca, because here too the title character is absent. The main character is the woman who works as a caretaker in the vacant house. When she finds Jennifer's diaries, she wants to unveil the past.
Ida Lupino plays a great role: a woman who looks small and fragile, but who stands strong when it counts. Howard Duff plays one of those men who makes you wonder whether or not he can be trusted.
Shadows and mirrors are used to create an eerie atmosphere, as if she herself is a reflection of Jennifer. The symphonic music also contributes to this. Halfway through is the song Angel Eyes, which would become a jazz standard.
