“I understand how you feel. Hachi, my friend, Parker is never coming home. But if Hachiko wants to wait, then Hachiko should wait. Have a long life Hachi.”

Hachi hits like a sledgehammer. I expected that, but you can't prepare yourself for this. And you don't really want that either, because sometimes it's just nice to get intensely emotional by a film. Weird really, all the recent human suffering doesn't bother me much anymore (probably smashed by all the bad news) but the story about a dog and its owner touches me deeply.

You fall in love with Hachiko from the very first scene, and the bond between Parker and Hachiko is touching to see. These kinds of films can quickly become too sentimental, but Hallstrom knows how to make it an intimate, sincere and certainly sentimental film. Gere is good and the Akitas deserve the dogs Oscar of course. The beautiful images and cinematography make it a very atmospheric whole and also a compliment for the atmospheric piano music, which adds to it all. Very American, but not bad this once. Really enjoyed.

Heartbreaking movie. This is a movie that really touched me.

Yes, I admit, actually the film is cheaply sentimental. You take a cute dog, a beautiful story with a tragic twist and you put sad music underneath. Success is almost guaranteed to move the viewers (at least the dog lovers). But the film's setup works and it never gets too sentimental. The dog is very cute and Richard Gere plays the owner in a very sympathetic way.

The film is loosely based on a true story, but if you think about it some plot twists are quite illogical. That in itself doesn't matter much. I see the film as a tragic fairy tale with a moral about fidelity, more than that (fortunately) does not seem to be pretended.

4.5*
