The Rocker plot
"Opportunity rocks."
The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer. Robert "Fish" Fisherman is a passionate drummer who played in the band "Vesuvius" in the 1980s and got kicked out shortly after. Twenty years later, after his rock fantasies are shattered, his cousin comes to tell him that his school band ADD is looking for a new drummer. He agrees and becomes the newest member of the band, but tries to put his best foot forward so that he doesn't get caught again.

So many people's obsession with Rainn Wilson is really incomprehensible to me. Besides the fact that every single player in The Office US is miles below the cast of The Office UK, I was really surprised here at the shameless copy of Jack Black that Mr Wilson puts down here. Unfortunately for Wilson, he really lacks all the charisma that Black does have and every 'witty' remark is no more than a missed opportunity to convey something funny and convincing. The only actors I could still see funny in are the band members of Vesuvius (wtf was David Bradley doing there?), and they only appear for a few seconds.
On top of that, ADD makes the kind of music that makes my pants sink. Irritating emo bullshit without any kind of balls. Would such a band be allowed to open for a glam rock act (which is apparently exceptionally popular)? If you're making a film where the protagonist constantly yells how rock n' roll he is, then I can expect a portion of rock n' roll, right? No, when it comes to music, I easily find This Is Spinal Tap, Still Crazy and Rock Star better than this shit.
Well, the film was entertaining in all its light-heartedness, I think everyone could have easily predicted that it would be a flop.

It starts off quite nice, Rainn Wilson is also someone who can carry a movie like this fairly easily. The comparison with School of Rock is never far off, although Jack Black is someone who takes his role a little more seriously, while Wilson goes full for the parody.
But after half an hour the real comedy suddenly disappears and the film wants to be little more than a faint rise to fame story of a "rock" band. I'll just put quotes around it, because the music that comes out is really of the worst kind, I wouldn't dare call it rock and I have nothing to do with the genre.
The rest of the film actually gets duller by the minute, the "rock & roll" content is really minimal and the drama doesn't work at all. It's a shame because it's a waste of the actors involved in this movie. Wilson manages to uphold the honor a bit, but otherwise it's just corny mess.

A little comedy, a little drama and a lot of noisy music. All of a level that can hardly tolerate daylight. Besides, I got tired of Rainn Wilson's shrewdness after ten minutes. Very mediocre.
