Argh, it wasn't until Viola Davis came into the picture that I remembered I've seen this tearjerker before. But no longer knew how it went on and how it ended....just forgot the whole movie. Even when I looked here beforehand, no light went on.

So ill on a warm summer night I kept watching. It was best to chew. Richard Gere didn't annoy me as often happens and I like Diane Lane. Because of her, I would have preferred to see another naughty one like Under The Tuscan Sun for the umpteenth time.

With James Franco? Well, he was equally cute in the picture. Would have been better if Viola Davis had been mentioned. It would have been even better if a black actress like her had played the part of Diane Lane. Hollywood and black actresses. Black actors have it better. But that's another problem.

So a 3* because I easily finished the film twice. Also by Viola Davis and James Franco. Although everything about Viola's character was caricatured. Oh well, like everything in this movie.

After three films together (including the Drama / Thriller film "Unfaithful (2002)"), Richard Gere and Diane Lane are so familiar with each other that it immediately looks like they have been married for years in this Drama / Romance movie.

Doctor Paul Flanner (Richard Gere) moves into a beautiful hotel on a deserted beach

in the town of "Rodanthe". Adrienne Willis (Diane Lane) fills in as a hostess and takes care of her only guest. Both characters have major emotional problems and as a hurricane approaches and it storms in their heads, the two grow closer. Do they find happiness together or do they carry too many problems with them?

The signature seaside hotel is definitely impressive, but the film itself is too melodramatic to really impress. The clichés are too bold and the dialogues too stiff.

Nights in Rodanthe won't offer you anything you've never seen before. But I think if you as a viewer are pointed out that this story comes from Nicholas Sparks, you know exactly what to expect. If you like Safe Haven, Dear John and The Notebook, I can say with some certainty that Nights in Rodanthe will please you too.

It's a pretty standard romantic story with not a lot going on, but the chemistry between Richard Gere and Diane Lane is definitely there. I read above that both have shared the screen before, which may explain the natural interplay. The characters of both are also well developed, so that the ending comes in for a while. The chosen shooting locations in Rodanthe are also beautiful and the hotel where the main characters stay is attractive. Probably not a film that will stay with you for a long time (not me at least), but one that does what it promises.

3*
