The references to well-known science fiction such as Star Wars, Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey must hide the fact that Airplane II: The Sequel is a literal copy of the first film on almost all fronts. Not only cast members and style, but also a striking number of jokes return. It makes Airplane very unnecessary and - just like the first film - not such a fun comedy as genre fellow Naked Gun. Not all jokes work and a number of jokes that do work you already know from the previous film. Fortunately, Airplane II also has some new nonsense, a few new puns and lame slapstick does work. Especially if the movie doesn't try to be funny in your face too much, it works. Like seeing "Worst Boy - Adolf Hitler" in the credits.

3 stars.

This time it concerns a space flight with a terrorist on board and a technical defect. Of course, Ted Striker [Robert Hayes] is back on board, initially to win back his ex-lover Elaine [Julie Hagerty], but of course also to get the spaceship safely back on the ground.

Who the original Airplane! If you haven't seen it, will undoubtedly rate this film a little higher. This is basically a remake of that movie, with many of the original cast members returning to do a (usually slightly less fun) twist on their prank or even simply repeat the prank! As a result, there is only sporadically something original to discover in the first hour. It's not until the last fifteen minutes, when William Shatner steps in as the commander to help Striker, that the film is at its strongest. Then the strong jokes follow each other in quick succession and there is really something to laugh about for fans of the original film!

Sequel to 1980's Airplane!. While much of the cast returned for this sequel, much of the behind-the-scenes crew has been replaced. The main absentees are of course the trio Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker. They directed the first part and were also the creators of all the jokes. None of them returned for this sequel. Instead, we'll have to settle for writer and director Ken Finkleman, who previously wrote and directed the flopped Grease 2.

The fate of Airplane II was not much better, the revenues were only a fraction of the original and the film was slammed by the press. Not entirely unjustified, because the film recycles happily. There are simply too many jokes from the first movie being copied 1-on-1. This film also lacks the presence of Leslie Nielsen, who stole the show together with Lloyd Bridges in the previous film. The latter is fortunately present again and does not disappoint (that joke about the name 'Striker'). Chuck Connors plays a nice supporting role as The Sarge, but his role is unfortunately very short. William Shatner also shows up at the end to ridicule his own Star Trek image. However, his role is a direct copy of Robert Stack from the first film.

This sequel has some fun jokes (that girl running up to her grandma), but otherwise it kind of suffers the same fate as most comedy sequels and that's that it's a bit more of the same.
