Jimmy Dade (Bridget Fonda) is the attractive wife of Frank, an untrustworthy and abusive husband. When an enraged Frank knocks her down the stairs, she ends up in the hospital. When detectives John Box (Kiefer Sutherland) and Andrew Ramsey (Steven Weber) interrogate her, she makes unconvincing claims that it was an accident. When the police find a body in a burned-out car shortly afterwards, they suspect it was Frank. Jimmy is arrested but manages to escape. She flees, discovers that her savings have disappeared and is astonished to find her sister Shelly murdered in a pool of blood. Her fear that Frank is still alive is confirmed.
