Naissance des Pieuvres plot

Summer in a new suburb of Paris, where there is nothing to do; except staring at the ceiling. Marie, Anne and Floriane are 15. Their paths cross in the corridors of the local swimming pool, where love and the pain of desire arise for the first time, bringing them closer and at the same time driving them apart.

An entertaining story. I think Adèle Haenel is a good and beautiful actress and I like her in the role she plays in this film, which made it easier for me to place myself in Marie's admiration for her. In any case, I could place myself well in Marie. It is not a film that has blown me away, but it looked nice and easy and the characters managed to touch me somewhat. Well played. A 7. 3.5*

For her feature debut, Céline Sciamma drew on experiences during her own adolescence, without becoming autobiographical. The title ("birth of the squids") refers to the soft feeling in the stomach at the first infatuation. It's not the usual story of the disapproving environment and coming out. It revolves around three girls with a clear place in the high school hierarchy: the beauty queen, the wallflower and the ugly duckling. It's about rivalry and power games within relationships. Marie has the spindly body of a stunted teenager. For her, it's a promotion when Floriane wants to hang out with her. Anne remains jealous.

A stolen
pendant is passed between the three girls and one boy, as a symbol of changing friendships. Adults hardly ever appear in it; they do not belong to this world. Synchronized swimming produces beautiful images, with acrobatics, nose pinchers and underwater cameras. Dance beats and colored lights evoke the atmosphere of parties that revolve around status and conquest. The free scenes have no intimacy, feel more like an obligatory song. Then, however, there are scenes in between that do have intimacy, such as the shower scene with the pleasant sound of water and breathing. It is a sober and realistic portrait of girls in a searching phase of life.

Excellent debut film by Sciamma, which sketches the story of three young girls on the basis of a coming of age story. Three girls who are very different from each other and whose timid Marie is the pivotal figure between the two others who actually do not know each other.

Identity, friendship, recognition and sexual development are central to the film. Friendship that also leads to some rivalry and competition, not only among themselves, but also among young people in general. Everyone wants to belong, everyone wants recognition.

In addition, a nice mix with synchronized swimming with nice, good images under and above the water. Excellent cinematography and camera work. No focus on the sacrifices and persistence of this activity as you see in films like Black Swan or Whiplash, rather a nice subplot within the film and the lives of the three girls.
