As a Bergman lover, I have ignored this film for too long. Certainly I also have a guilty pleasure for Wes Craven's Last House on the Left. But that's where the shoe pinches a bit. Maybe I watch too much shock cinema to be captivated by a film like this. Also by knowing the story through Last House on the left and often typical other rape & revenge films, this quickly becomes a predictable thing.

But I also tried to see it within his time frame. Because the movie is very dated. But Bergman wouldn't live up to his name if he could do something really special with it at times.
Visually it's a strong film and Bergman is the only one to keep the story honorable in the Middle Ages.
Max von Sydow also manages to convince me completely, that man always gives his characters a special character.

The film has many strong moments and is convincing to a large extent. But for me it just feels too outdated to be completely absorbed in it.
But I can definitely give this film a big 3.5*.

I can't help but completely agree with Dievegge's review. As far as I'm concerned, the Bergman that suits me the most so far. The allegory of the story about faith and Christianity will not be alien to this. Christianity and paganism are presented here as polarized, both visually and verbally. Ingeri is the embodiment of the pagan. Karin is the virginal pure innocence.
Faith is central. Doubt about this and the penance or the demand for forgiveness also come to the fore here. The black crows lurk just like the devil around the corner to sow sin and doubt.

Technically a typical Bergman I think with beautiful camera work. In addition to its symbolic value, the scene in which the father struggles with the tree also has a beautiful filmic artistic quality. With those black-and-white images, it's not always clear whether the sky was gray or foreboding back then.

The killing of the shepherds was a bit clumsy, but we are also dealing here with a pious farmer who, despite his hatred and loss, continues to have doubts. Nice ending too where the source washes away the sins of the believers and sinners. Beautiful!

Ingmar Bergman's films are not easy for the average movie viewer. He mixes influences from theater with expressionism so that his films sometimes resemble Shakespeare full of symbolism. This Jungfrukällan also falls under that. Although it is somewhat accessible compared to other films.

The film carries quite a bit of symbolism, as I just wrote. And I read some interpretations, especially in the direction of religion. For me, it is ultimately what I get out of it that counts, not necessarily what the message is that you should read in it. Although by reading Bergman's intentions, I hope to understand a little more of his work. At the same time, you should not explain such a film too much, the film must be able to speak for itself.

In itself a good film, which I will be able to get even more out of with a new viewing. Bergman will never be my favorite director. But step by step I see more of the beauty in his films.
