Read somewhere that people found this more intense and shocking than Martyrs. What a joke.

The film started out somewhat promising. The build-up was quite nice and although the acting of the children was not too good, Baker did her role very well. Her monologues to her children were also quite convincing at times.

Then the second part, where the film simply fails miserably. Do include themes such as rape and female circumcision in your film, but then you are too cowardly to explicitly portray them. Strange, for a film like this, to make such brave concessions. Ensures that the shock level is just negligible as far as I'm concerned. Then there is the end, perhaps an even bigger downer. Sentimental posturing (terrible soundtrack), which only undermines the film even more.

No, there are really plenty of movies that do this much, much better and more impressive, often without even containing all kinds of dirty themes. Next time a little less obedient and a little more modest please, because this is just a pathetic display. 1.5* for the role of Baker and the promising start.

Good film about two sisters who come to live with their aunt and nephews after the death of their parents. A film that shows the cruelty of man in all its horror. The psychological and later also physical torture result in a number of uncomfortable scenes. Certainly penetrating, but not equally believable everywhere.

The film is based on an event in 1965. Sylvia Likens and her sister were severely humiliated and abused by the foster mother, her children and neighbours, in the foster family where they were placed. How an inhumane example of murderous group dynamics resulted in a progressive erosion of the human dignity of the victims. Mind blow.

The film is also astonishing. The horrific event is no more than a template on which to hang a sadistic and banal film. Instead of a film that conducts dramatic and psychological research into the character's condition, tries to explain something, lets the perpetrators and victims speak, the viewer is confronted with a flat exhibition of sadistic suffering. The Girl Next Door smacks of exploitation cinema.

Nice for the enthusiasts. I thought it was a pointless movie.
