I have sometimes read the claim that the French cannot film. It is a very bold statement. But when I saw Diva, I remembered this statement halfway through the film. The film starts smoothly with a nice idea about a nice, grim confusion between a stolen singing voice of an opera singer and the stolen life of a prostitute.

The shark-like irony is initially evident not only from the story, but also from a deliciously aggressive editing and colorful camera work. It just starts to look like the writers of Diva started enjoying delicious Burgundian food with the necessary bottles of wine halfway through the screenplay, probably after an advance payment. Then the scenario had to be quickly completed with a number of corny solutions at a slowing pace. Very slowly but surely, a kind of pleasant matter-of-factness disappears from the film, as some American filmmakers can maintain until the end of a film.

Too bad, I found the discovery that a singer does not want to have her singing skills reproduced via a sound carrier very original and intriguing. It reminded me of that other great movie where the plot also included sound recording. Fortunately, Coppola's The Conversation remains at the same level until the end, if it does not creep up a bit further as the film progresses.

Diva is a very atmospheric French Crime Thriller. A postal worker secretly records a concert by his favorite opera singer, after which he is chased by criminals and police alike. What's on the mysterious tape?

The film has a beautiful 80s setting. From opera performances to new age gurus. A black opera singer and a gang of French criminals. The recordings are strong and Vladimir Cosma's music is truly magnificent. From the beautiful opera music from 'La Wally' and the suspenseful synthesizers to the melancholic piano music.

A very pleasant variation on Hitchcockian themes in a very contemporary twist.

This film particularly appealed to me visually and aurally. The recurring piece of opera is beautiful and gives a certain grandeur. This in combination with the almost surreal lofts in which the main characters reside. It creates an artificial atmosphere but without bothering me. Not realistic noir but more of a kind of fable. The villains are more for laughs than they radiate threat (especially that guy with the sunglasses is a caricature). The story seems to contain a Hitchcock motif with “the wrong man” being chased by both villains and the police. That adds to the charm of the story - a narrative that in itself does not seem realistic, but so what. Excellent photography and direction, with some haunting scenes, complete this urban fantasy. Paris is a special city, but I had not yet discovered this side of her.
