The Age of Innocence plot

Manhattan, 1870: The couple in love, Countess Ellen Olenska and childhood friend Newland Archer, cannot actually marry because of family and social pressures or they would cause a scandal. Beautiful Ellen, who has recently left her husband, must now decide whether to file for divorce; she will especially hurt her grandmother Manson Mingott. Archer has yet to break off his engagement to May Welland, which is again a sensitive issue in his social milieu.
