Doomsday plot

"Mankind has an expiration date."

A deadly virus prematurely ends the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Scotland, leaving the country hermetically sealed off from the rest of the world by a large wall. People who try to escape are shot and the wall itself houses all kinds of weapons to prevent the flights of the infected. 30 years later, the virus, dubbed 'The Reaper', suddenly resurfaces, this time in the heart of London. An elite team is sent behind the wall in Scotland to search for the work of Doctor Kane, who was close to a breakthrough in research 30 years ago before the outbreak.

Fine.

In principle, the post-apocalyptic event should suit me, but just about every film in the genre is a Mad Max wannabe and I just don't find those films interesting. There is so much more to the genre, but most movies stay within that narrow circle.

That's why I ignored this Doomsday from Marshall for a long time. And not entirely unjustified as it turned out. Despite the fact that the film lumps together a lot of different influences and can still come out a bit surprising, the individual elements are little more than a good repetition of clichés without adding too much yourself.

My biggest problem was that the two remaining groups were completely uninteresting. One group of knights, the other Mad Max clones. And bad ones too, with their silly music show and exaggerated but faintly "disturbed" behavior. It's strange that the poster lady dies so quickly, I didn't expect that. Also a bit of a shame, because she was still the most interesting character of the punk group.

Marshall clearly has the talent to make something out of it as a director. Individual scenes often look nice, but the odes didn't do much for me. It's also something I've become a bit allergic to lately, all that messing around with stuff from the past is just getting a bit tiring.

But not a bad movie per se. Individual scenes are okay, brutal enough, and Marshall's intrinsic talent saves the film from destruction.

3.0*

Plow...not that I expected much from this, but somewhere I had a moment like this several times, this is not good...

The concept is there like so many, a nice idea / starting point that then depends on bad choices and stupid moments. The setting and decoration are still quite acceptable with colored but slightly one-dimensional characters, but especially in action scenes an attempt is made to reinforce them with 'smooth' editing and accelerated playback. Something that fails hopelessly and or results in a look outside, on the smartphone or brings a headache. Throughout the film, the editing is nothing short of a failure. It is cut like crazy and every action scenes immediately loses its clarity.

Let's face it, the reasons to skip Doomsday are countless, but the biggest plus, a reason to watch is: Lee-Ann Liebenberg as the tattooed warrior but especially the tough Rhona Mitra. A not to be missed piece of eye candy in her spandex shorts, and therefore the film's sole raison d'être. By the way, don't forget that the music is fun with Kasabian, Fine Young Canibals and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, among others.

Otherwise mediocre, maybe stupid entertainment for some. I thought it was a very mediocre movie.
