Poor, very poor. After seeing this film, I'm starting to doubt Lucio Fulci's abilities again. City Of The Living Dead was good, despite the slow start. House By The Cemetery only has a somewhat smoother ending. At least half of the eighty minutes was completely unnecessary. Fulci's qualities in creating atmosphere of good gore are well established. However, the gore is too brief. The atmosphere could have been better, but that's mainly because the story was bad. Sometimes too stupid for words. The whole Freudstein thing could have been fun if more attention had been paid to everything outside the infamous basement. The cover of the DVD gave more clarity about it than the film itself. If I hadn't read that, House By The Cemetery would be about another monster in the basement of a remote house. You don't have to be smart that the basement is dangerous territory, but the residents still dive into it like flies on shit. The cemetery has not been in view for a full minute. Fun moments, like Anne's head rolling down the stairs like a bowling ball, are rare. In any case, they ensure that I do not give a particularly low score, together with the beautiful poster.

Not inferior to The Beyond and City of the Living Dead, as far as I'm concerned. House by the Cemetery has a straightforward script for a change, which greatly enhances the atmosphere. It's also nice that the entire film takes place in one single location. Highlights here are again the large-scale murder scenes. Great especially that kill from the babysitter. Very much enjoyed. Strong soundtrack too.

4*

I really think this is a bit less than the previous Fulci's I saw. He makes less use of his strengths here. Still, I choose this any day over the bulk of contemporary horror. Even Fulci on a lesser day is nicer.
