Tau Ming Chong plot
In 1850, the Taiping Revolution starts, when 430 million Chinese have had enough of the oppression under the rule of the Qing dynasty. The result is a 10-year civil war. Pang Qingyun is a general who fights against the Qing armies and who tries to become governor. He and his two blood brothers, the rebels Zhao Er-Hu and Zhang Wenxiang, fight side by side, liberating entire villages from the Qing armies. But the characters of the men differ too much and Pang Qingyun goes too far if he wants to achieve his goal, causing innocent victims. As a result, their blood brotherhood falls apart.

Nice film that distinguishes itself from many other such Chinese films by excellently edited action scenes, especially the big battle fairly in the beginning is fantastically portrayed, and by nicely developed character developments. Also well acted, especially by Jet Li.

It still feels like a 'made' epic. The Pirates of the Caribbean-esque soundtrack already makes me feel which way battle after battle is going. If this was a European/American production we would all be in awe because of the high level of kitsch. One-liners, angry headlines, promising each other eternal loyalty and screaming for forgiveness, maybe it's part of this type of film, but I don't like it that much.
The battles and costumes look beautiful and fortunately do not drown in the use of CGI.

Several impressive massive battle scenes are the most special feature of this film in which passion, honor and ambition are also extensively present. Takes a little too long and sometimes there is hardly any progress. Far from a masterpiece from the East, but certainly not a bland product.
