One Way Street plot

"A stolen fortune, a borrowed woman, and a man too many !"

Doc Matson (James Mason) is a physicist who has donated his knowledge to the local underworld. When the gang members return after a robbery, Matson suddenly sets a trap: he has poisoned the gang leader John Wheeler (Dan Duryea), and only an antidote in his possession can save him from certain death. In exchange for this antidote, the gang will have to give up the stolen $200,000. Fleeing possible reprisals, he also takes Wheeler's sweetheart Laura (Märta Torén) with him. Matson comes under intense pressure to such an extent that he begins to exhibit fatalistic personality disorders, driving Laura to despair. Finally, he finds peace by retreating to a small Mexican town to set up a hospital. But not for long: Wheeler is still after him. He soon decides to return to Los Angeles to return both Laura and the money to Wheeler. But will Wheeler be willing to do this?

I have rarely seen a film that takes such a qualitative nosedive. A great opening in which Doctor James Mason cunningly escapes Dan Duryea's gang with $200,000 in cash (the plot summary above unfortunately already reveals *how*) is followed by a sort of Shangri-La experience in a Mexican village where the doctor suddenly turns out to have a heart, and although I find every new character suspicious , almost everyone turns out to be just plain nice and to have the best intentions for the world in general and Mason in particular. The final scene, however, seems to be a capitulation to post-war pessimism and fatalism as it found its embodiment in film noir, and that results in an extremely artificial, completely unbelievable, and, in its entirety, actually just plain silly film. Too bad about that first fifteen minutes and the strong cast (including William "Cannon" Conrad, Jack Elam in a small role, and a young Rock Hudson as a truck driver during a don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it moment).
