Coup de Torchon plot
Senegal, 1938. Lucien Cordier is the only policeman in a small village. He is a colorless, somewhat plump man who is not taken seriously by anyone and is laughed at and manipulated by everyone. Lucien submissively undergoes the domination of his wife, the mockery of his brother-in-law and the humiliating arrogance of his colleagues from a neighboring village. His mistress Rose also uses him only to satiate her own possessiveness and frivolity. And the corrupt settlers don't even consider his so-called authority and authority. A rather unclear film, not bad but certainly not a great one. The film has its (comic) moments, but the story did not always captivate me. The acting is okay (especially from Philippe Noiret), but I've seen the three protagonists play better roles. All in all it didn't really work out.

Crime and black comedy. That often forms a good combination and this film is bang on. The succession of cynical situations, characters and dialogues are perfectly placed in the context of a French colony. The latter is, of course, an expression of extreme and cynical opportunism anyway. Based on a crime novel by Jim Thompson whose other work I already appreciated. Very nicely portrayed by Tavernier.
