Richard Chance and Jim Hart are friends and partners at the Secret Service in Los Angeles. When Hart is murdered by the counterfeiter Rick Masters just before retirement, Chance vows revenge. Tired of playing by the rules, he's blackmailing, ignoring direct orders and going against traffic on the highway. Chance leaves no stone unturned to take down the slippery but deadly Masters, but his obsession is not without consequences. Will the bitter vengeance ultimately lead to its own demise?

Home game for Friedkin. Crime story with a dogged cop and then a roaring car chase should of course not be missing. It is not a rehearsal exercise, the film is way too strong for that anyway. Time has also not stood still and so you are already quickly in the unmistakable eighties. Beautifully colored letters during the credits, a typical score that is occasionally surprisingly strong and a cast full of well-known headlines.
Perhaps most striking is Los Angeles, which is almost (or completely) claiming a leading role. With a city in the title you are of course more or less obliged to take a close look, but nevertheless the compliments to the location scout and Robby Müller's photography. Furthermore, tough, sexy, hard and uncompromising with a plot that does not have an ounce of fat. Friedkin's choice of lock is the icing on the cake. This is how a crime movie should be. Tribute.

What is most striking about this film is how loose the story flows. It jumps pretty hard from character to character, without really losing focus. As a result, the pace is quite high. The film starts a bit slow and the soundtrack is often a bit too much. Very 80's it's a bit of a shame but I got into it as the film progresses. The action is hard and the chase is exciting. Found how it goes wrong there also works very well. You sense Vukovich's guilt well, and then Chance has become definitively unsympathetic . Friedkin often does that very quickly. Also that they become partners is not very long and they never become buddies along the way. Cast is nice, with the first major roles for Dafoe and Turturro.
I enjoyed myself, has a few old age complaints, but Friedkin had some courage. Anyway, let's see some more of him.
