Yella plot

Yella has decided to leave her small town in East Germany for a new life on the other side of the Elbe, leaving behind a stranded marriage. In Hanover she meets Philipp, a young capital trader, who gives her a job as an assistant. Although Yella has absolutely no experience in the financial world, she soon discovers that she has talent. Negotiations are an exciting game and her appearance and cool disposition turn out to be weapons. She and Philipp are a great match and everything seems too good to be true. But Yella is not yet convinced that her past has been forgotten.

Way too vague for me. The ending came across as a surprise, but does not tie in brilliantly with everything that came before (and is therefore a bit pretentious). After a good first 20 minutes it becomes very boring with Nina Hoss who limits herself to hanging her head and for which I cannot understand why a Silver Bear was awarded for this. Not recommended except for the arthouse diehards.

Yella is the name of the main character. A young woman from a small town in eastern Germany where work is scarce. She therefore seeks her happiness in the big city of Hannover. Cristian Petzold's film paints a dark picture of Germany. There is misery in the East. This misery also exists in the western part of Germany.

In addition to being a drama, the film is also known as a horror film. The horror aspect is difficult to explain. As it progresses, it becomes clear that the horror label is not based on explicitly recognizable scenes, but is recognizable in the ominous atmosphere. Petzold accentuates this atmosphere by having Yella think back to a serious car accident she experienced. Yella occasionally hears the impact of the car on the water and hears the cawing of the crows who observed the accident as silent witnesses.

Yella is a socially critical drama in which Petzold criticizes the capitalist system in general and unscrupulous speculation with virtual amounts in particular. The film shows a world that briefly offers Yella some comfort. Comfort from the malaise of a broken relationship and a hopeless existence in the small town in the East. However, the world of capital does not necessarily appear to be a beautiful world and disillusionment is always lurking. The emotionless system is stronger than the individual. Even if the individual does not resist but conforms to the system.

The film exudes a pessimistic sense of life that is supported by the camera with subtle, minimalist and hypnotic images. The gloomy feeling is further emphasized by pasting the music of Beethoven's Mondscheinsonata underneath the images. At the center of all that gloom is always Yella. A mysterious woman who always wears the same red dress and who keeps finding herself in strange situations that have a surreal undertone. Great movie.
