1890. Olivia Harwood returns to London by ship after her missionary husband dies. On board she meets the charming artist Mark Bellis. He soon becomes a tenant of a room owned by Olivia and then her lover. The amoral Bellis has Olivia completely under his control and she does anything he wants, even if it involves a theft and blackmail plan.
