One of the better ghetto sketches. Where such films sometimes go under by regularly hitting false notes (yes, you, Menace II Society) or a director's sermon, Fresh z a private passage. The only thing that really bothers it is Chuckie's poser behavior, but that has its function within the whole. Like basically everything that has. Then here and there there is sometimes a youngster who is acting a bit shaky, but the centerpiece is a strongly interpreted and built-up guy.

Reasoned rather than fussy, but when it comes down to it, it's bold. A breath of fresh air. That also applies to the music. No bloated noise, but a diverse, calm and even playful score at times. And then Yakin has also created a clean and thoughtful story that goes from a gruff, bitter drama with a few hard moments to a throbbing crime thriller (and back again) with Samuel L. Jackson and the chessboard as a driving metaphor. Excellent hood movie.

Good movie about a boy who deals drugs on the streets of Brooklyn. Quite realistically portrayed (also certainly because of the excellent location work). The story is a bit on the slow side at times. A believable role by the young Sean Nelson and a fine directorial debut by Boaz Yakin. Easily 3.5 stars.

Bought and seen recently. It's a nice mix between Do The Right Thing and Menace 2 Society.

We follow Fresh, a 12-year-old errand boy for a local drug dealer who lives with his aunt. He only finds his father on the street as a homeless person. In between drug dealing, Fresh just follows the life of a 12-year-old. He goes to school, hangs out on the street and spends his time with his nieces and nephews and plays chess with his father. It soon becomes clear that such a double life is not without consequences. Fresh becomes embroiled in a competition and his previously stable double life begins to falter. At one point he faces an important decision.

And in this decision we see what the power of a naive child can cause for both rival or collaborating gangs. A very strong starting point for a course that is still simmering in a standard way.

Fresh is a special crime film in which we see once again that life in the ghetto is not easy and everyone can be an accomplice or be mistrusted. Sean Nelson plays the role of his life here as a youngster and the atmosphere of the Bronx is impressive. Well directed also by the man who later wrote the no nonsense action lick with Jason Staton.

Not to mention the soundtrack too. From dreamy jazz to the traditional hip hop. It comes out well and I just left the credits alone for a while.

4.0*
