The Savages plot

Brothers (Seymour Hoffman) and sister (Linney) who have grown apart are suddenly forced to care for their ailing father, from whom they have become deeply estranged over the years. Suddenly snatched from their own busy lives, they are given the time they need to think about themselves and everything else in life. Painful moments from the past have to be talked out, after which it remains in their minds as a closed episode. But that turns out not to be that simple and it takes a lot of time and patience to get closer to each other.

Indie film that seemed worthwhile to me because Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a leading role in it. I had no idea what the movie was about, so I went into it blindly.

The natural play of Hoffman and Linney is fine and keeps the film watchable enough, but it doesn't get very interesting anywhere. It ripples so quietly that it quickly becomes boring.

Especially now that I've read the plot description, I think there would have been a lot more; a bigger conflict, more drama between Hoffman and Linney, something that would have given it just a little more spice.

I can't make it more than a 3*.

Great movie with excellent acting by Hoffman and Linney. On the one hand a heavy subject but on the other hand also a number of funny scenes that made me laugh. A good mix of comedy and drama, I like this. Too bad there won't be any more movies from Hoffman, he was a great actor. I enjoyed this.
