Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach plot

"Hold everything! The cadets are dropping in on Miami Beach for an all new adventure."

During the police academy graduation ceremony, Commissioner Hurst announces that Lassard is retiring. The news hits like a bomb, not only for the commander himself but also for his loyal students. There is no doubt that Harris has something to do with this. After all, he has been preying on the commander's job for a long time. Hurst also reports that Lassard will be named Agent of the Decade at the Miami Beach National Convention. Lassard wants his students to attend the ceremony and pays for their tickets. There are also three gangsters on the plane, who have just committed a successful diamond heist. When they arrive in Miami, Lassard accidentally takes their bag. Meanwhile, Harris and his assistant Proctor have also arrived.

I started hating this movie, until Rene Auberjonois came into the picture and immediately ensured that the film series finally had a real recognizable badguy. That Guttenberg isn't there doesn't bother me because I never liked his character anyway, it's a shame Zedd was no longer there. Furthermore, as the whole thing progressed, I became less and less annoyed. Not a constant repetition of jokes (no Blue Oyster Bar!) that we've seen hundreds of times, a nice bad guy and finally a varied location in relation to that very boring city. Amazing, but I actually had the most fun with this one.

Still too stupid for words, but oh well.

Well, Police Academy is a series that was quite popular, especially in the 80s and 90s. I also remember the rainy afternoons where I was binge-watching the whole series. Now so many years later you look at these films with a different perspective and you notice that the films have become an anachronism. Humor, style and jokes just evolve.

It is good that the series sticks to its authentic format. Here and there new or returned characters so that the recognizability remains. Miami is a different location this time around, but is "refreshing" in its own right. The Everglades are just beautiful. Obviously you don't have to imagine much and the contrasts are again very large. Everything appears to have been chewed on, but there is something nostalgic about this series, however bad it may be today. Despite missing some familiar faces, Tackleberry, Hightower, Captain Harris, Proctor and Commander Lassard still have plenty to keep you entertained.
