At times heavily emotional film in which it is difficult to point out negatives, but which nevertheless failed to touch me across the board. The acting is good, the playing of the close-ups too, as well as working with the flashbacks, so that the story is pieced together little by little by the viewer. The soundtrack, with the few 'del Toro' songs, is not bad.

However, at times I found it a little too easy to come up with this plot, put some sentimental music under it and let it run quite conventionally.

Fortunately, the ending of the film does not follow this convention, and it gives you a taste of the lives of two people who have not experienced the easiest setbacks, but who do want to see for 'the good'. Even if it is day by day and little by little. More than 3.5, so 4*

The one where dr. Gonzo finally gets his shit together!

Benicio Del Toro shows again why he is one of the best actors around right now. Halle Barry also follows in his wake quite for her doing. Susanne Bier knows how to pull off excellent performances from these two, and the film is well balanced on the drama level and does not go completely overboard (which often suffers from films in this vein).

Phew.

Haven't seen much of Bier yet, but drama isn't really her forte. This film is again much too melancholy and sentimental, where it mainly feels like it is all being pushed down your throat. A little subtlety would have done the film well.

Too bad for Del Toro, because he plays quite well. The rest of the cast is of a lesser level, although there is no one who really stands out. Duchovny probably the least, but he also has a rather moronic character to work with. Fortunately, his role is very limited.

But the emphatically present music, the "sensitive" camera work, the plot that keeps adding drama ... it's too much of a good thing. I often get that idea with Bier's dramas. It is very thick on it, so that my interest quickly disappears and mainly irritation remains. Not the best movie this.

1.5*
