A few weeks ago I saw Rogue. Because that was fun entertainment and we were in the mood for another crocodile movie, I ended up at Primeval. Unfortunately, this one is a lot less good.

Primeval seems to have lost its way in terms of tone, which they want to strike. On the one hand, everything is taken very seriously, especially highlighting the war between the Tutsi and the Hutus. On the other hand, it contains the most silly one-liners, including the accompanying very exaggerated fake CGI crocodile, which looks really crappy. In any case, the balance is completely off in that area.

Still, there's quite a bit of entertainment in it. Orlando Jones has such a bad role as a cameraman, it really makes you laugh. All those wrong one-liners of his, miss the point terribly, but are therefore witty. The rest of the cast isn't too good though. Purcell is a bit lost and the supporting roles are also not worth mentioning. The action itself is still nicely portrayed and quite entertaining.

As a serious film in any case very bad, as pulp still quite entertaining, although the tone should have been much more towards the latter. Now it remains too much in the middle and therefore misses the mark, although the wrong entertainment is fortunately still a big plus.

Bunch of naive western suckers go crocodile hunting in African war zone. That, in short, is what the film is about. Like others, I can't quite place what the makers have in mind with this film. As a crocodile film it's not great: not scary, exciting, bad graphics and the crocodile does show very special things (biting wooden posts). But intended as a film that should show abuses, it only testifies to a completely misplaced Western sense of superiority.

Pretty funny.

Only found out while watching that Primeval was a SyFy movie. In that case, this is a much, much better movie by SyFy's standards. The first advantage that Primeval has in any case is that the film was filmed on location, so that the warmth and atmosphere of the location also comes across nicely.

Furthermore, the set-up of Primeval is somewhat different, given that it is a film with a hard message and at the same time a film in which an impossibly large crocodile triumphs. It is a special combination, but the horror genre has often managed to achieve these special combinations. It just doesn't really work in Primeval.

Visually it looks nice. The crocodile is cleverly kept out of the picture for a large part, so that the bad CGI is not always noticeable. In terms of tension, the film is disappointing, actually there is just no tension. The atmosphere of the film is largely due to the location, because the direction does not get along very well.

The acting isn't great, but it's okay. The entertainment is basically what makes Primeval. The murders can be called nice and even cruel, the location makes way for many beautiful things and the momentum is good from the start. In fact, Primeval isn't even such a bad movie when it comes to breaking out.

It's not perfect, but Primeval guarantees good entertainment. The target audience of this film is a bit hazy as this film consists of 2 completely different films, but it looks good and the adventure is regularly palpable. Much, much better than expected, but on the other hand, it's not really a good movie either. It is somewhat messy and lacking in tension.
