"From opulence... to rags... to love."
Rich but spoiled Joanna Stayton hires carpenter Dean Proffitt to fix a closet on her yacht. However, she refuses to pay him because she is dissatisfied with the result. When she later falls overboard while looking for her wedding ring on the deck and loses her memory in the process, the divorced Proffitt comes to fetch her in revenge to say that she is his wife, has to do the housework and take care of his four children.

Nicer than I expected. This somewhat fairytale-like and catchy comedy is tailor-made for the Russell-Hawn couple. Possibly Hawn's best (double) role. At first I hadn't even recognized her as a spoiled rich maniac. The woman with amnesia who is taken in is also something you can do a lot of fun with. The silly jokes are there but they were quite well dosed. The expected dash of romance was more than welcome. Overboard plays out the best trump cards towards the end, making it a film that leaves a satisfied smile afterwards. Between 3 and 3.5.

Mediocre.
I think this is going to be a movie that I'm going to prefer the remake over the original. If this is Overboard, then it doesn't take much to top it as a remake. Nevertheless, both films are close to the same score, so you wonder if your own scores will differ very much.
In any case, I thought this was a comedy of sometimes questionable level. The general level of jokes isn't exactly high and the acting isn't great either. Eventually Russell starts to find his niche, but his forced and many attempts at comedy in the beginning do not benefit the film. Hawn never really knows how to level up here.
Furthermore, it is a separate story about which you occasionally scratch yourself on the head. How this story ever became a successful concept is beyond me. It is original, but mostly wrong. Now I don't have a lot of problems with that, but I couldn't suppress the thoughts that this is actually a very disturbing film for the (too) long running time.
Visually it doesn't look special. Not surprising since it is a comedy, but throwing a little more detail into your houses never hurts. The locations now remain too simple with only a luxury boat and a messy house. Camera work and cinematography are all not strong and so Overboard is a film that mainly focuses on the comedy and the story. Not a problem, but it will be if both are not very nice.
Because some jokes are still a bit fun, I can't give them too low a rating. It all still looks a bit off and Russell does it fun in the end, but other than that I didn't think this film had too many pluses. I'm glad it looked away quickly, because otherwise it would have been a tiring film. Points for the children, the smooth running and some roles. Otherwise moderate.
