Ibogaine - Rite of Passage plot

Documentary about the controversial drug addict Ibogaine takes the viewer to the United States and Africa and tries to answer the question whether it can help drug addicts. After her parents' divorce, Ruth gets seriously dope. A few hellish years later she wants to stop permanently. For Cy, a young father and an 11-year addict, drug addiction is a tough task. Like Ruth, he is on drug addiction treatment with ibogaine, an effective remedy, but… illegal. Ibogaine is an active substance extracted from the roots of an African plant that grows in Gabon. Traditionally, the "sacred wood" was used in the initiation and healing rites of the Bwiti faith, but in the 1960s Howard Lotsof (re)discovered the withdrawal properties of this psychoactive substance. Since then, he has tried in vain to introduce ibogaine as a medical treatment in the fight against the enormous problem of addiction in the West. Government and pharmaceutical industry show no interest in this simple and cheap drug addiction treatment.
