Reprise plot

Phillip and Erik, in their twenties, are young writers ready to take on the world. Their first manuscripts are finished and they dream of literary glory and the romance of their forthcoming artistic life. But the future is never as you think. Erik's manuscript is harshly rejected while Phillip achieves great success. Too much success really, especially for the somewhat fragile Phillip who succumbs to the great pressure and gets serious psychological problems.

It is funny that many quotes from the film apply to the structure and immaturity of this film, such as "Structure, no Substance". Trier's searching is indeed evident, especially if you have seen Oslo first. Whereas the latter conveys a clear message and overwhelms you with it, with Reprise it is far from clear where Trier is heading. A wide range of themes is touched upon, but no clear choices are made anywhere. The coming-of-age theme is a bit too easy for me, the snobbish and, at times, puerile behavior of the group of friends does not come across sufficiently, and because Phillip and Erik both get quite a few screens, their own stories are not explored well enough either.

The play with sound and image (especially light!) is, on the other hand, already brilliant, but not enough for this debut film to really stick with you. 3.5*

The only Joachim Trier film I hadn't seen yet. I think the acting is good, I find the story reasonably interesting, and I like the restrained style. Unfortunately, I find it a bit boring at times and quite chaotic, which meant I couldn't follow it well and couldn't really get into it. I think Anders Danielsen Lie has a pleasant, calm atmosphere. I also think In Oslo, August 31st is very good. I liked that film better than this one. 3*

Apart from his short films, this feature film debut was the only film by Joachim Trier that I had not yet seen. In retrospect, I unfortunately conclude that I missed very little. The story about two struggling and unstable aspiring writers failed to captivate me at any point. The acting performances are not bad, but in my opinion, that is all there is to say.
