Saw its predecessor last year, now the successor. And I must say that this film is not much inferior to its predecessor. On the contrary. This is a bit more fast-paced and the story is easy to follow despite the different storylines. The costumes and sets are beautiful. But the trump card of this film and of its predecessor remains the great performance of Cate Blanchett.

Reasonable.

The Golden Age is a deserving successor, but nowhere does it reach the level of its predecessor, unless Cate Blanchett succeeds himself with dignity. The dark backroom politics has unfortunately somewhat disappeared here. There is no discernible subtlety of alliances and a love triangle with little substance is what one gets instead.

Nevertheless, it is all still interesting enough, both audiovisually and as a lesson in history (although I am well aware that this will be a concise lesson). Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush are once again on a roll and I don't think Abbie Cornish is inferior. Clive Owen is the somewhat boring Owen that he often is. It's not just because of him, because his character is never out of the picture. Regrettably.

Movie that I gave a chance because of the reasonable reviews here. Understand in hindsight that this is part two.

Film stands out mainly because of its very smooth style, something that in itself does not quite fit the customs and etiquette of the time, but is surmountable, partly due to an always good Blanchett and Rush. Some beautiful scenes and shots pass by, the shot of Blanchett standing on the cliff with the burning armada in the distance is breathtaking, as are some locations in high vaulted buildings, churches of course, which are also fantastic. Nice color choices, color filters by the way. Even Owen doesn't fall out of proportion, who in the form of charming freebooter Raleigh has actually found a role that suits him reasonably well. Furthermore, the attack stands out as a beautifully constructed and the string of power-hungry with Mary Stuart as a shocking drama queen and Jordi Molla with a fascinating interpretation of Fillip.

Still, the film has trouble keeping me interested throughout its entire length and I don't find the love triangle between Elizabeth, Bess and Raleigh at all interesting, even rather sought after. Then another point of criticism about Drake's tactics with the 'fireships', a means that dispersed the Spanish formation but did not sink any ships. Something that is more or less suggested in the film.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age therefore mainly stands out as a nice film for once with beautiful locations, costumes, the necessary drama and trickery and deception, but a missing x-factor. Final verdict is therefore very nice for once, but no more than that.
