Nice but not great, in the wrong order of course, after part 2 now then part 1. Although the content is better and more interesting than part 2, it just isn't my genre.

The rise of Elizabeth is covered, in a tone just as smooth as the other part. The scheming and all the political worries are nice, including the decoration and locations. In fact, besides the large cast and the excellent acting, there is little wrong with the film and it is understandable that the film did well during the Oscars of '99.

Despite some very nice moments, it never gets a hold of me and can only moderately captivate me. All in all, a biography/drama with such a background and show is simply not my thing. Nevertheless, there is enough quality in the film.

Very solid British costume drama about the striking Queen Elizabeth I. The condition is, of course, that as a viewer you must be somewhat interested in the (royal) history of England, although it is not the case that nothing happens for two hours. The film is sometimes even very hard and director Shekhar Kapur does not mince words in that regard. The cast is impressive: Geoffrey Rush is unparalleled, but Richard Attenborough, Kelly Macdonald, Daniel Craig and Joseph Fiennes also come out well. The flowers, however, go to Cate Blanchett, who does a fantastic job of portraying the title character. The film takes a while to warm up, but in the end it captivated me effortlessly. In addition to the acting and the script, you also enjoy the costumes and sets, which make the atmosphere feel very authentic. The sequel almost 10 years later has certainly piqued my interest.

3.5*
