Quirky video by Chan-wook Park that I actually appreciated primarily because it is so incomparable to anything else. I found the humor more inventive than really funny and I appreciated the drama that came up towards the end more objectively than I went along with it. In any case, it is quite something that Park has managed to make a film about a psychiatric institution that is not reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and also does not raise the eternal question of whether what we see is real or the imagination of a madman. To turn it into a romantic comedy is a real achievement and some scenes are very beautiful. Especially that bizarre flying scene with the yodelling and the ladybug or the feeding of the rice while everyone watches, those are real gems. The fact that it is all shot in style also helps. It's just a shame that it sometimes drags a bit and at one point I felt a sense of oversaturation, especially because it rarely developed into more than a freak show.

Remains my favorite Park.

What remains are the many creative ideas, which are properly developed. There is something crazy and wacky about the film, with plenty of moments that have the potential to stick in the memory. But ultimately it is the shift to a sweeter, warmer film that maintains the score and anchors the quality of the film.

It's nice how Park manages to build up the relationship between two not so sympathetic characters, something that is fully utilized at the end. That comes at the expense of a somewhat grander ending, but I thought it was quite nice that way. Although it is good that it is built up gradually, so that the first hour still has plenty of time to be more creative with the story.

Visually it remains enjoyable, although the CG is a bit outdated. The soundtrack also remains nice and the actors are on a high level. It's a bit less eclectic than many other Park films, but it's still a pretty crazy bunch and it feels more like his own film, whereas his other films contain many things that I've seen better elsewhere.

4.0* and a extensive review

Watched some of Park's films in recent months. I knew from the start that it wouldn't be for me, but this is a total letdown. Despite the Tim Burton-like fanatics and visual talent of the director, there was really nothing I could do with this. I can only guess at the purpose of this poor product. Just watching Koreans act silly for 100 minutes: the underlying drama is completely lost.
