How beautiful cinema can be and what a stunningly beautiful film this Akira Kurosawa has put down here.
Beautiful scenes such as the wind storm at nightfall and also the scenes with the tiger.
Nature is boss and man is insignificant are the recurring reflections in this unique film.

Convincing partly because of the special bond between a golden Japanese fighter and a more modest Russian expedition leader. Beautiful cinematography (that sun! that scene with securing the choirs!) and an interesting balance between the wonderful first part and the tragic final part. Also a voice-over that worked wonderfully for me, because you are dealing with a concrete travel report, in retrospect. The first Kurosawa that really bluffs me (I just expected a lot more from Seven Samurai) and a very pure look at the idylls of nature - and the sadness that remains when those idylls can no longer be. A friendship that is portrayed idealistically (in fact, I soon realized that this story is set somewhere around the Russo-Japanese War, there is no such thing as coincidence) but never unmasks itself or feeds itself with false emotions.

Beautiful story between a Russian expedition leader and a native hunter where the mutual respect between the two develops into a true friendship. The friendship is the core message in the film and is very intense and authentic. Uzala has peculiar habits and his rituals or cultural practices often raise eyebrows, but he soon accepted into the group due to his immeasurable knowledge of nature.
The captain is a caring figure to his troops and his guide. He is open to other cultures and also to nature. His troops are no different and the message is one of tolerance, friendship and helpfulness. In addition, you have the very nice cinematography of Kurosawa with its beautiful nature shots. Some scenes are also very worthwhile, such as the storm, the urge to die and the interpersonal relationships.
You really only have two characters that really matter. The others are just decor stuff. A bit of a shame really, but this way the emphasis could also be placed between the two protagonists and this was carefully worked out. The ending is a bit sad, not so much the death of Uzala, but more of an individual languishing in a habitat where he doesn't belong...
