Dejected account of a man and woman's search for their estranged husbands at the time of Fengjie's demise. The depressing images are in stark contrast to the spectacular natural environment of the Yangtze River.

Magical how Zhangke draws a parallel between the loss of a region and the loss of identity : people are on the run, lose their home, get lost, are lost and it is therefore evident that the story revolves around 2 people looking for someone. His vision of the 3 gorges dam project is so confrontational and so painful: everything old is being destroyed, everything is being built (the new), others are being demolished (the best paid jobs are of course those demolition works - how ironic). The first scene is immediately monumental : conjuring music with long camera movement of ordinary people on a journey. With the traditional versus the modern (public ferry versus cruise ship) in the background. Because times change, China changes (that beautiful scene in which a bridge is lit up!). Zhangke films in a docu/vérité style (reportage style, by the way, the film was born through his documentary about the project) with brief moments of surrealism (those UFOs). Zhangke knows how to choose his images well and the ultimate is the last image: in the distance you see a man walking on a rope stretched between 2 apartments. Because of the distance you can't see the rope and it looks like the man is stepping in the air. People are on the precipice of innovation and seem to have nothing to stop them.

Were there no objections or protest marches to stop the dam? Of course, the communist party of Hu Jintao, the leader of the People's Republic of China in 2006, has little interest in this. Something that has to happen happens in a pseudo-dictatorial state. Even if it is at the expense of thousands of families.

We are dragged along by the desperate looking for their loved ones who are forced to move. The setting is beautiful along the river or the created lake. And that mishmash of stacked barracks called houses fascinates me. The China with two faces. There is a huge gulf between the city and the countryside.

A sober and authentic film about the little things in life: eating noodles, smoking a cigarette. If only life were and remained that simple.
