The Mesmerist plot

An 1845 short story from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar". The 1950s, a wealthy dying man named Ernest Valdemar (Howard Hesseman) and quack Dr. Pretory (Jason Voerman) try together to cheat Death through hypnosis as Valdemar takes his last breath. Valdemar finds himself in a sepctrum between life and death and he describes the afterlife to his servant. This infuriates his daughter (Jessica Capshaw) and her boyfriend (Neil Patrick Harris), as they are determined to inherit the man's estate.
