On the eve of an important trial against Albert Mendoza, an organized crime leader, the central witness flees in panic and dies after falling. Martin Feruguson, the prosecutor, has to find new evidence overnight.

a film that surprised me very positively, as a crime film it is quite hard, even though you see little real violence, its strength lies in the build-up of tension and the more or less mysterious nature of the big gangster Mendoza.
When his face is finally revealed at the end of the film, it is almost a bit of a letdown, but the end scene is still well done.
Bogart is doing well as District Attorny, and Ted de Corsia's role as Rico is also strong as the bad guy.
The tension is immediately high and later we get to see what happened before through flashbacks.
It is mainly the atmosphere that makes the film so strong and keeps you on the edge of your seat, no romanticization of the crime in this film but brutal ruthlessness.
