Reportedly an extremely unreliable film adaptation of Billy Hayes' imprisonment in a Turkish cell. Many things are just plain wrong and just try to exaggerate some facts. It's a shame really, because the story itself is sad enough.

As a prison film, it hardly distinguishes itself from other similar genre films. Little innovative and rather poorly developed. The focus is more on the friendship that has arisen. That's fine, but this could have been discussed in more detail rather than an exaggerated speech in court.

It is distressing that the punishment is disproportionate to the crime committed. Turkish prisons are no fun either, and the mock lawyers are as corrupt as the legal system itself. Well acted, but not memorable at all. Unfortunately.

A prison film with the dust of 42 years on it, but which has withstood the test of time effortlessly. Turkey is still a corrupt gang in all these years, in that respect time seems to have stood still.

In particular, the grimy atmosphere of this film is extremely beautifully and consistently revealed. Brad Davis seemed enigmatically familiar to me, but I couldn't identify him. Well, he plays a starring role. Climax aka the most poignant moment was the visit of his beloved. What a tragedy!

How true this is from a dramatic episode of Billy Hayes's life doesn't really matter; This movie is definitely going to my top shelf!

Poor.

A classic, it seems, but a weak classic. The moderately acting Brad Davis puts down a somewhat dull character. It is not possible to sympathize with anyone. Then I had the most fun watching John Hurt, who gives a bit of color to his character. Also a bit one-sided. Visually, of course, dull and grey, which undoubtedly gives a desolate impression, but it doesn't get much further than that. The monotonous character is broken over time by a weird and in my opinion misplaced gay scene and the equally weird scene with the sweetheart.
