Det Okända. plot

"You are no longer who you think you are."

Five biologists travel to a remote area to investigate a forest that burned down several years earlier. They will find out how life returned to this devastated land. Already on the train, frictions arise when one of them presents himself as the leader. At their destination, they take up residence in a caravan and a tent, their home for the coming weeks. After the first day of exploration, they discover an unidentifiable object. This event marks the beginning of a week marked by horror, paranoia and madness. The biologists have taken a step into the unknown. Something in the forest creates fear and tension between the five scientists. Suddenly the road back to civilization seems very long.

The Unknown is a nice film that takes its inspiration from, among others, The Thing. The setting is of course very reminiscent of Blair Witch, but not copied. The budget was so small that all scenes were filmed chronologically so that the actors would get dirty naturally, instead of having to be remade. There are also no special effects used, which is great considering the tension the film contains at times.

The fact that the whole thing was filmed with a handheld camera creates a shaking image, which enhances the realism. Yet I was never really captivated for a moment. I felt a constant distance between me and the biologists. That's because the actors weren't really that great, but maybe also a bit because of the language.

Once again, it's great that no special effects are used, but that means the film will quickly disappear from my memory. Looking back, there just isn't that much happening and a raunchy shot (to name an example) could have given the film that little bit extra.

Very low budget, but Okända is still a quite charming film. The first reference that logically comes to mind is The Blair Witch Project: a lot of handicam filming in forests where it becomes increasingly clear that something is wrong, without us really seeing much. When I think about the film now, it's almost surprising how much I enjoyed it. Very little explicit happens, after a while the story starts to become predictable, and there are also few scary moments - a believable atmosphere and paranoia all the more. We follow an expedition of five Swedish biologists aged about 30 to a remote forest area in the far North. And of course that doesn't go well; the other reference for me is Invasion of the Body Snatchers, we see one expedition companion after another behaving strangely and being taken over by the alien organisms they encounter here and there in the forest. But it is mainly a combination of credible characters that I could easily empathize with, a setting in the Scandinavian forests in which a lot of things happened during the day, and an increasingly high level of paranoia and distrust between the expedition members. I didn't mind at all in the end.

Mediocre, only sporadically effective Swedish mix of The Blair Witch Project, The Thing and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The shaky camera work suggests a found footage work, but the film is not exactly that, so the choice for this visual style actually makes no sense. The acting is passable and the slowly escalating paranoid atmosphere is well done, but too little is done with the subject and the location and it rarely gets really scary.
