Rufus Dawe has been wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit. He receives a life sentence and is sent to the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land. During his escape attempts, he falls in love with Sylvia, the overseer's daughter. In addition, he confronts his sinister doppelganger John Rex and the evil prisoner Gabbet.
