A decent insight with excellent staging, but not a truly successful film. It should be viewed separately from the origins of The Beatles, but more as a film about someone at a turning point in their life. However, the film is too superficial for that and lacks dramatic quality, partly due to the somewhat lackluster performances by Stu and Lennon. It also fails as a portrait of Stu, especially considering he (and his girlfriend, Astrid) did have some influence on The Beatles' look. But that, too, is never reflected. 2.0*.

A decent film about the bassist of a fledgling English rock band who falls in love with a German girl. The film focuses more on the relationship between the bassist and the girl, while the origins of The Beatles are somewhat more captivating. The zeitgeist is well-captured, with several excellent scenes and a fine performance by Stephen Dorff.

As a Beatles fan, I'm very familiar with their history, but I'd never gotten around to watching this Backbeat until now. The atmosphere, visuals, and script… it's all excellent. And the acting is convincing. It is, and remains, a biopic, so it's tied to what happened at the time. For this film, they sought advice from Astrid Kirchherr, which must have been beneficial. The story of the early Beatles primarily serves as the backdrop for the Stuart Sutcliffe-John Lennon-Astrid Kirchherr triangle. On the other hand, the Beatles' story is, of course, very compelling—the prospect of eternal fame that awaited them, but which no one could have predicted to such an extent. Paul McCartney wasn't entirely satisfied with the film's release because he felt its rock 'n' roll quality had been diminished. I understand him in that respect. For example, they have John sing "Long Tall Sally"—which was always a Paul song—and Paul only sings a sweet melody. The latter is quite an exception in the soundtrack, which bursts with energetic rock 'n' roll, played and sung by the stars of the time. The energetic soundtrack completely captures the atmosphere of what it must have been like in the Hamburg bars back then.
