Smokin' Aces plot
"Nobody gets away clean."
FBI Deputy Director Stanley Locke (Andy Garcia) has sent his best agent Richard Messner and his seasoned buddy Donald Carruthers (Ray Liotta) to Buddy 'Aces' Israel's not-so-secret hiding place in Lake Tahoe. Their mission is to protect this shady magician from mob boss Primo Sparazza, who is said to be behind more than 130 murders. To save his own skin, Buddy has agreed to testify against Sparazza, or so the story goes. The mafia has put $1 million on Buddy's head, which is followed by a bizarre group of hitmen.

Nice.
Smokin' Aces opens quite nervously, but can quickly pave the way to the inevitable clash of the countless candidates in the game. The pace is good - people don't wait to put down some characters prematurely -, and that makes for a nice movie.
The action is fine, the over-the-top content is perfect and among all the killers and cops there are plenty of colorful characters or gimmicks, the three brothers leading the way. With some hip colors and filters, it is a bit embellished, but with the rarities present, this brainless active entertainment didn't really need that.

I need to let some of what I just watched sink in...
the story itself started well. Good actors in my opinion, so I had certain expectations. However, I soon found it to be messy. Way too many characters and the scenes are mixed up. I was also cringing while watching certain scenes like those 3 German hitmen and that little kid who does karate. I sometimes felt like I was watching 2 different movies, a serious movie and a really bad comedy movie. dude..

Stays fun.
Of course it is now a little less glitzy than it once was, but the list of films that followed Tony Scott's Man on Fire/Domino still appeals to me. Perhaps also because Hollywood is usually not that niche, while these kinds of films still appeal to a very specific audience.
Visually very noisy, otherwise a film that (fortunately) does not take itself too seriously. There are some twists at the end (an ending that goes on a bit too long), but they don't distract much from the earlier primary story, about a string of hitmen who all prey on the same target.
I have no idea whether this film will still be one of my favorites in a possible next review, it is occasionally a bit on the edge, but in the end I did have a good time again, and there are several scenes that managed to impress.
