"The world famous novel on the screen at last!"
Charles, the dissonant son of shipping magnate Gordon Stewart, is forced to work on one of his father's ships, The Pilgrim, after a bar brawl. He is initially regarded as an arrogant rich man's son by the crew, but over time he gets on better with them. Charles sees how badly the men are treated by the brutal captain and together with an undercover writer (who wants to know what happened to his brother on a previous trip with The Pilgrim) he fights for better conditions for the crew.
