Isolation plot

"It didn't want to be born. Now it doesn't want to die."

Some people on an Irish farm are conducting a genetic experiment on cows. A pregnant cow gives birth to a calf. The calf appears to be carrying a parasite-like creature with razor-sharp teeth. When the evil creature escapes and starts taking victims, the group will have to take out the creature. If it also turns out that there is a threat of infection, it becomes a race against time.

A whole birth, that birth. There is something innocent about it. Such a farm, those cows, the calving, but also rather dirty. Isolation even makes it downright filthy and it manages to do quite well with that for an hour. The film looks neat, lighting etc. works well and sometimes there is a sound effect that falls into place, but what is missing is a portion of menace. The last half hour seems to be reserved for that.

But by then O'Brien can no longer win over his rather ridiculous premise. As soon as the scientist spoons up the danger, twice even, it all becomes really too funny. Scenes such as Dan choosing the not-so-wide sea with his tractor come across as forced and the creature fails to make much of an impression. Also because it forgets to really let loose in the finale. The afterburner is even hopeless.

Reasonable horror, thanks to the realistic farm atmosphere and the not-so-cliché characters, except for a few. It is indeed a kind of The Thing on an Irish farm only then of course with less successful effects (although certainly not bad gore) and less paranoia.

The danger comes from two angles: the 'beast' itself and an infection but the latter feels a bit dragged in. If that had been worked out well it could have been a lot more exciting because that is where Isolation lacks, just like the rather tame climax. The physical threat also doesn't come across as strongly, something that was done better in another animal horror Proie.

What is effective is that it is always filmed in one location with less than a handful of actors. And because it all muddles along nicely in that filthy mess and has no irritation factors,
still a narrow pass.

ps the plot description above is a bit misleading.

Relatively low perhaps, but compared to genre peers it is exactly where it should be. A solid film with a nice look, but lacks the necessary punch (certainly towards the end) to justify the cliché course. A handful of excellent (slimy) effects save a lot, but do not disguise the lack of a real grand finale. A somewhat larger creature could have worked the score up by 0.5. Promising work, but again a director who has come up with little.
