It is very tempting to compare this film with the predecessors from 1963 and 1935, don't do it, you will be disappointed, of the three this is the lesser, while all the ingredients were present to make this version a classic, were present . A great cast, a story that everyone knows, locations like they've never seen before and a soundtrack to die for. Why then does it not succeed to push this film to great heights, that is partly due to the director, he is too light to portray this classic story in the right way. He has made nice films, but it is precisely this story in which the personal relationship between two people has to be portrayed very sharply, which he does not succeed in doing. Gibson was also not ready (at that time) for such a heavy role, it would have been better if Daniel Day Lewis had gotten his part, he would probably have portrayed the role of Christian a bit more subdued and by that subdued I mean the outburst of Christian at the moment the ship is taken over, then Gibson acts like a full blown idiot, neither does Gibson have the mobile and narrow face suitable to reflect the conflict between duty and friendship on the one hand and disgust at his friend's actions. Bligh and sympathy for the crew on the other. It is obvious that Gibson was cast during that period for his looks and because he had become a crowd pleaser after films like Mad Max 1 and 2 and Galipolli. Does he play badly, no, he doesn't, but he didn't convince at some moments. Hopkins is clearly at home in his role and again shows in this role that he is an acting centipede. But the film also has beautiful things such as the recordings, fabulous, but the soundtrack is the strongest, in a word sublime, which also made me give the film three stars.

Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins was 47 years young at the time of this film and it showed in his firm demeanor and steps. We also see a still young Mel Gibson here as a young actor, he was 28 years old at the time.

Both carry the film with verve and that is also noticeable in the film, it runs smoothly and the viewer will not be bored for a moment.

Hopkins plays the English captain William Bligh who becomes increasingly strict during a trip to Tahiti, where they will collect breadfruit, root ball and all to transport them to Jamaica. There it could function as cheap food for the slaves present there.

Captain Bligh does not come across as a sympathetic man to the viewer, he is quite punctual and everything has to go by the "booklet" which does not look good to his crew.

Here is an opinion/review of jono where you get a nice description of the story. '

WV also wrote a nice piece about this film.

If you want something more: baspls

Despite the age of the film, we had never seen it and were pleasantly surprised about the story and the film adaptation: a 7.5!

Solid.

Classic adventure film in all its fibres. Largely made, with beautiful shots of the ship, often supported by the characteristic sound of Vangelis' music. And, after a while, it looks exotic, which gives you the feeling that the crew has indeed ended up somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

But it's also just a bit too clunky. Anthony Hopkins is caricatured, so is Mel Gibson. But otherwise the latter is well cast, as mindless Adonis. The scene in which he is seemingly effortlessly seduced a couple of giggling trezebezen, possibly unintentionally, make the laughter. It can also be serious, because if I were on a ship for months with no women but a lot of other men, I might also give in after such a warm monokini welcome from exotic beauties. Danger or a cultural difference does not immediately appear to be an issue.

After a while the film takes on a slightly 'harder' tone. It becomes, logically, more hopeless. Meanwhile, there are films that have portrayed survival much better. Hopkins and his followers seem to be particularly troubled by beard growth. The dubious choice of the mutineers can create a somewhat foreboding atmosphere at the end. The story of Fletcher Christian was already known to me. I often find the history lesson interesting, apart from the fact that it's too crazy to walk around with everything that happened at the time.
