Van God Los plot
"Rock Hard and In Your Face"
17-year-old schoolboy Stan befriends petty criminal Maikel, 3 years his senior. When the boys in a panic kill their victim in a robbery, they inadvertently impress the head of the local drug mafia. This one sees something in the boys and they quickly make a career as his death squad. Their friendship grows closer as the events unfold. Only Anna, Maikel's girlfriend, is a problem. Stan has grown to feel more for her than he would like, but still manages to keep her at a distance. Then Anna finds out what makes Maikel so much money. Frightened, she calls on Stan to help her get away. Stan must choose between Maikel and the terrified Anna. An impossible choice.

Complete deception. Everything that makes me itch is in it. No idea who is or is not the accent here, but in most cases it doesn't sound like anything. Not the only problem with the voice over, it really does everything to put you to sleep. The crime plot may not have a name, but you also get a bunch of flat soap drama, where Angela Schijf tries out facial expressions that are so over the top, it becomes laughable. She's not alone. Tygo Gernandt is already a poser anyway, here it is now and then, certainly somewhere in the final phase, really barren and angry.
A lot of that kind of exaggerated stuff that feels totally out of place. The music also adds to that with all kinds of jubilation and, if it is just as difficult, a piano tune. Not too hard. The same goes for the flashbacks, especially when Kuijpers returns a few times to something you saw about twenty minutes before. Then put such a large, white, flashing H in the top left of the screen. What a poverty. The only positive I can make of this is that it is squeezed in less than an hour and a half. And that Turkish boss. He's a, uh, boss. Other than that I can't do anything with it.

The average on MovieMeter created expectations, but they were only partially fulfilled. Van God Los is certainly not a bad film but anything but perfect.
The actors are fine, especially the two lead actors. Angela Schijf did not strike me positively or negatively. Her role was also limited to spreading the legs every now and then. Maybe not the right way to create, er...draft. Strangely enough, the acting performances are okay individually, but there is no strong chemistry.
The story is simple and easy to follow. I don't see the added value of the voice-over, it adds almost nothing. In the distance, Van God Los is comparable to Gomorrah, although the latter film has more atmosphere and a better effect. Yet its Dutch 'counterpart' has something in common with this: it grabs somehow. The last-minute robbery, Gernandt's despair: it doesn't leave me cold. Unfortunately, the film has mostly bad moments. Half an hour of extra playing time could have shifted the emphasis in a pleasant way every now and then.
There is not much to complain about in terms of camera work, although I can't detect any style of my own. Like the rest of the film, it's not bad, but it falls just a little short everywhere.
