Stick It plot
"The world of competitive gymnastics is about to be turned on its head."
Haley Graham is a skater these days, and she's good at it. But when she accidentally crashes through a window during a stunt, she has to pay the consequences. The judge gives her a choice, whether she goes to a teenage prison or she goes back to the world she left behind years ago. The gymnastics world. Here she is forced to compete in an elite gymnastics competition. She meets an old friend from her old team, who isn't too happy with her, since Haley left her out in the cold last time during the final.

The movie gets off to a slow start. Only when she actually participates and she ignores her obstinate behavior does it start to accelerate. Film is fairly predictable, but there are also some small surprises to be found. Acting performances are fine, although I'm not much of a fan of Vanessa Lengies. I understand that it falls under comedy, can't think of anything better so quickly, but I didn't really laugh. If you want to cringe with laughter, you better ignore this movie. It's a bit more serious in many ways.

A kind of Bring It On (2000) but with gymnastics.
For me the film was saved by the presence of Jeff Bridges and some nice dialogues helped too. Furthermore, the jumping of the lead actress was nice to watch and I thought the choice for some music was remarkable. Bottom line, though, it's all a bit less than Bring it on, but that shouldn't spoil the fun.
Still above average in its genre.

Average.
Stick It is by no means a bit of an innovative film, so the elaboration counts more with these kinds of films. The film certainly has the visual flair, but it doesn't quite make it as a whole. It was nice and fresh enough to draw another sufficient from my side.
The acting is provided by a fairly experienced cast who also do a pretty good job. Bridges plays a bit on autopilot, but for him this is also more of a money role. Easy roll. Peregrym is also clearly doing better, although no one seems really motivated to put in a seriously good performance.
Visually quite colourful, the training sequences complete the film. Nice use is made of the editing software, with which you as a viewer can feel that there are experienced people behind the helm who know what to do. It also keeps the film watchable, and then the 103 minutes don't last too long.
The finale is predictable and the writing is also a bit easy. Still, the intention is quite good and attempts are made to deepen the characters a bit. The camera work is nice, the editing above average, it just could have been a bit fresher. However, I still thought it was fairly innovative, and that earns me points.
Stick It is a very good sports film that does little to stand out from other similar films. These aren't exactly the movies I'm going to give higher marks to, but it's entertaining and anything but a bad movie. It's all just too professionally orchestrated for that. It gets a small pass from me.
