Mediocre film in which a missing boss of a criminal gang causes a lot of commotion. The simple story is mainly uninteresting because of the somewhat messy editing (a more structured structure would not have been wrong). Also, the movie is too long. Some brutal scenes (mostly torture) with good make-up effects. A small 2.5 stars.

"I think there are two ways to look at Ichi the Killer. Either you take it all dead serious, or you see it as a cartoonish violent comedy. I see Ichi the Killer as a second category title, a high-energy rollercoaster ride with a lot of blood. and insane turns, only to leave you breathless at the end.Kakihara, the sadomasochistic right-hand man of mob boss Anjo, must spring into action when the mobster in question has disappeared. He comes on the trail of one Ichi, a shy young man with insatiable bloodlust. .

The entire film revolves around the upcoming conflict between Kakihara and Ichi. Director Takashi Miike uses the emerging climax as a common thread, seizing the opportunity to explore subplots and side characters. For example, we meet a cop who struggles with his past and to make matters worse has lost his weapon, there are three men who for unknown reasons want to take revenge on Anjo, and there is a prostitute with the same sexual preferences as Kakihara. Meanwhile, he indulges in torture that is portrayed so casually that I find it difficult to suppress a chuckle. (...) Some will get puked, others (like me) will see the pitch-black humor of it.

Less funny are Ichi's actions. He has a knife hidden in his boot and is endowed with a supple leg. He cuts his victims into pieces without any problems. Literal. (...)

It is without doubt a filthy film with grotesque blood fountains, Miike does it all with a big wink. It's horror, drama, comedy, revenge, almost every genre fits in it. The editing and music give the title an inexhaustible energy, the plot twists follow each other in rapid succession. Ichi the Killer is definitely one of the better controversial films in cinema history."
